一战初期，英法士兵的勇气世所罕见，有的士兵在不用麻药截肢后，还挣扎着要再上前线。于是，这些将国家看得比自己生命还重的士兵，不再被当成人，而是单纯的数字。战争的第四年，法国全国发生哗变，被送上军列的士兵们，“发出像猪被屠宰时绝望嚎叫一样的哭声”。而补充到前线的德军新兵，更是遭到老兵们的侮辱和殴打，被骂作“拖延投降的混蛋”。


一些聪明人痛苦地意识到，自己被当作了无用的牺牲品。他们有这种想法毫不奇怪。

    这套书是确实存在的，Australian War Memorial的网站有全套PDF下载：Australian War Memorial
    但是此书12卷，每卷近千页，除非当事人指出题干里这些文字的具体位置，否则我这样的英语渣很难确认这些描写炮灰的文字是否来源于此……
