(Flag of the Governor of Victoria)

(Civil Ensign of Australia)

(Naval Ensign of the United Kingdom)

(Naval Ensign of Australia)
(Flag of Aboriginals of Australia)

Australian Aboriginal Flag - A flag to represent and identify Australian Aboriginal people did not exist until 12 July 1971 when a flag designed by Mr Harold Thomas was first flown in Adelaide. The red stripe represents the land and the black symbolises the Aboriginal people. The yellow circle represents the Sun, the giver of life. Copyright of the Aboriginal Flag is owned by Mr Thomas who has granted an exclusive manufacturing licence to Carroll and Richardson Flagworld Pty Ltd. Originally designed in the proportions 3x5 the flag is now only available in the proportions of 1x2.
The Australian Red Ensign - the national flag for use by ships registered in Australia. From 1981 yachts and small ships may use the blue Australian National Flag in place of the Australian Red Ensign.

Herald Federal Flag - With Federation approaching questions arose as t
o what the flag of a federated Australia should be. In 1900 the Melbourne Evening Herald newspaper conducted a public competition for a Federal Flag. Mr F. Thompson won the £25 prize and the flag has become known as the Herald Federal Flag. Federation was symbolised with six red stripes below the Union Jack and Australia was represented by the Southern Cross. Two versions were created, one with the Southern Cross on a blue background for use by the Government and another for general use with a red backgound. The design was both praised and criticised, leading to another competition by the Review of Reviews for Australasia magazine that was later incorporated into the Federal Government's flag design competition in 1901.
