Koonung Secondary College is a high demand coeducational state government school. Its current enrolment is 1100 students, with a ceiling of 1200.
 
Koonung develops the whole child, with high expectations for their academic, social and personal development. The core curriculum includes Chinese, French and Japanese languages, as well as sport education at Years 7 and 8. Electives are offered at Years 9 and 10, and Year 10 students have access to VCE subjects.
 
The school is well known for its innovative programs, including a selective entry High Achievers Program from Years 7 to 9. The Year 9 'Live Life' program builds life skills and engages students with relevant, challenging and values-based units of work across the whole year. At Year 8, 'Inquiry' is taught as a core subject.  'Connections', from Years 7 to 10, involves students meeting for 20 minutes each day with their Connections teacher. The Year 10 curriculum allows students to specialise in their areas of choice, with English being the only core study.
