Message from the Principal

Welcome to Sacre Coeur

Sacre Coeur is a contemporary school that builds on and values its rich traditions dating back to 1888.

Our education model has our Founder, St Madeleine Sophie Barat's dynamic vision of education at its core. This vision accepts that education enables women to be true agents of change within society. Sacred Heart Schools across the world base their school programs, their pastoral care for student wellbeing and their operations, on the Five Goals of Sacred Heart Education:

  • Faith which is relevant in today's world
  • A deep respect for intellectual values
  • A social awareness that impels to action
  • The building of community as a Christian value
  • Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

At Sacre Coeur our girls share their educational journey from Prep through to Year 12 building relationships across year levels. Our students develop a love of learning in an environment that encourages curiosity and innovation and fosters the development of their faith.

I encourage you to visit Sacre Coeur and see our school in action. You will feel the difference an education at Sacre Coeur makes to each student. You are warmly invited to call our friendly Registrar to make an appointment to visit the school.

- Maureen Ryan (Principal).

About Sacre Coeur

There’s a special quality at the heart of every Sacré Coeur girl.

Sacré Coeur is a leading Prep to Year 12 Catholic School for girls in Melbourne. It was founded on its Burke Road site in 1888 by the French order of nuns, the Society of the Sacred Heart.

The beautiful French Gothic buildings and Victorian garden setting are complemented by the latest facilities, with a three-storey library, an IT and VCE Centre, a modern cafeteria, meeting rooms and a new science wing.

Sacré Coeur is a member of the international network of Sacred Heart schools and is connected to sister schools in over 150 schools in 40 countries. Our international exchange program with our sister schools is highly regarded as one of the country’s best, with many girls each year participating in reciprocal exchanges in Europe and North America. As a result, our girls are internationally minded and know of their place in the world.

Joigny, Sacré Coeur’s Junior School, provides a vibrant and caring environment for students from Prep to Year 6. Single-level classes ensure that the students are known well. Students’ individual talents can be identified and programs can be tailored to assist the girls to reach their potential.

Curriculum

Much of the self-confidence that has become a hallmark of a Sacré Coeur student is gained in the classroom, right from Prep, where the girls are guided by expert and dedicated teachers and where they are encouraged to follow their hearts in pursuing their interests, subject choices and pathways. The school consistently achieves excellent VCE results.

The curriculum offers a diverse range of activities, targeting the individual needs of the girls. The subjects provide a rich, varied and well-rounded curriculum. Religious Education is central to the studies at Sacré Coeur.

We believe it is our responsibility to help every student achieve her very best. We aim to achieve this through a comprehensive and relevant curriculum and our caring and supportive environment.

Student Wellbeing

At the heart of our school is concern for each girl’s wellbeing. Our aim is to inspire optimism, hope and excitement for the future in our students. Our comprehensive pastoral program ensures all girls have their emotional and social wellbeing carefully nurtured.

Reporting to the Director of Student Wellbeing or Head of Joigny (our Junior School), the Student Wellbeing team comprises year level coordinators and two psychologists who are available to our students as part of the student social and emotional wellbeing program.

The role of the Student Wellbeing Services at Sacré Coeur is to provide a counselling service for students and support for parents and teachers in respect to students.

Co-Curricular

Sacré Coeur is a member of Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) and students may participate in weekly inter-school competitions in tennis, hockey, netball, indoor cricket, badminton, volleyball, soccer, basketball, football and cricket. GSV swimming, athletics and crosscountry carnivals, the Duke of Edinburgh Award program and a comprehensive outdoor education program are offered.

Visual and performing arts are strong components in the curricular and cocurricular life of Sacré Coeur. Opportunities abound in music, choirs, drama, debating, visual arts and public speaking as well as committees and clubs.

Transport

Sacré Coeur is easily accessible by public transport and school buses travel from Vermont and Berwick
