Boarding for boys at Assumption College began at the turn of the 20th century after the school was initially founded as a boys only day school. More than 100 years on those first courageous young boys would scarcely recognise what has become and will become of those old, cold dormitories of yesteryear.
Assumption College Kilmore will soon boast a state-of-the-art, brand new boarding facility. Building commenced on the new boarding facilities in March 2013, and they will be operational for Term 1 2014. Within these new facilities, we will continue to cater for both boys and girls from regional Australia. Individual rooms will be available for senior students, whilst juniors will be in either two-bed or four-bed rooms. These rooms will be warm and comfortable, with a large study desk, a wardrobe, a bed and a storage area. There will be three houses built, with a capacity for 24 students in each house.
Each house will be equipped with kitchen facilities, where hungry boarders can make themselves a snack. A comfortable relaxation area will also be a part of each house. Wireless internet and mobile phone coverage will also be available to each house.
Each house will have accommodation for staff, and it is hoped that families will become boarding house supervisors, which will enable us to continue to engender the family spirit of the boarding community.
Supervised study is an integral part of boarding life, and our professional boarding staff ensures that the two to three hours of study time per night is used effectively. Assistance can be sought after school from our willing teaching staff, as well as from our ‘in-house’ tutors and our dormitory supervisors during study hours.
Attention to the spiritual needs of the boarders is an important part of life at Assumption. Each week the boarders celebrate a Eucharist together that is prepared by them. This enables the boarders to express their own faith and feel part of the celebration they are taking part in.
The physical needs of the boarders are also well catered for. With a nurse on duty from 8.30 until 5.00 every day, a doctor who has a clinic at the school Monday to Friday and an excellent local hospital, the boarders are well cared for. The catering staff also ensure that the boarders are well fed, with nutritious, well-balanced and plentiful meals.
Boarding is never going to be home. At Assumption we encourage a partnership with parents, who are welcome anytime. We endeavour to create a family atmosphere within the boarding house, where all are welcomed, and we give all students a sense of security and care.
