Scotch College is one of the most respected and dynamic schools in Australia, providing an integrated range of educational programs for boys from the Preparatory Year to Year 12.

Founded in 1851, Scotch College is one of the oldest schools in Victoria. Located on one campus in the heart of suburban Melbourne, the school’s magnificent grounds span 27 hectares and are flanked by the Yarra River. The school has one core goal — to develop each boy to his full potential. The school is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria. Christian teachings underpin Scotch’s philosophy and practices; from each boy’s first day we work to encourage a sense of community and respect for others.

Every student is encouraged to take part in a wide and challenging variety of activities in the classroom, sports and creative arts. Maximising intellectual and personal development

To give each boy the maximum opportunity to reach his full potential, Scotch offers a range of educational and co-curricular programs tailored to challenge him at every stage of his intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical development.

Students begin to make a limited number of subject choices in Year 7 and Year 8, with specific choices postponed for as long as practicable. The introduction of advanced work in specialist areas is left until the final years of schooling.

Students learn to broaden their horizons and appreciate other cultures. German is studied in the Junior School, and French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Mandarin Chinese and Latin are offered for study in the Senior School.

Highly skilled staff assist in ensuring that all students, including those with learning difficulties and very able students, have every opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential across all areas of the curriculum.

Encouraging and caring for each student

Fundamental to all of our programs is a commitment to pastoral care. We believe in fostering an environment that is supportive, caring and fulfilling, an environment in which each student can develop self-esteem and a belief in his ability to achieve his ambitions. A highly effective framework ensures that each student receives individual support and attention. Class teachers monitor the overall development and welfare of individual students in the Junior School. In the Senior School, a combination of senior staff and tutors work together to ensure that all students receive personal attention and develop a strong sense of belonging. College Chaplains also play a key role in the area of student welfare and are available for guidance or simply a friendly conversation. In addition to adult role models and counsellors, each boy benefits from having mentors closer to their own age. A buddy system in the Junior School and a peer support program in the Senior School teaches older students the importance of responsibility and leadership and helps younger boys become confident members of the school community.

Creative arts: unparalleled opportunities for expression

Learning to play a musical instrument, create a piece of sculpture or perform before an audience encourages students to explore their creative and artistic potential.

At Scotch, boys enjoy a range and depth of musical, dramatic and artistic options which cater for even the most talented and dedicated individual. Performances of orchestras, bands, choirs and plays take place throughout the entire school year.

Through the generosity of former Scotch students, the new James Forbes Academy features magnificent theatres for music and drama, as well as comprehensive facilities for individual and group tuition, providing unparalleled opportunities for artistic expression.

Sport: experiencing teamwork and achievement

Through our sporting program, students learn the values of competition and achievement. Participation in sport builds unique skills, reinforces the importance of teamwork and provides the experience of striving to achieve a personal best.

Scotch is an enthusiastic participant in the interschool sporting activities organised by the Associated Public Schools of Victoria and has an outstanding record of achievement in this highly regarded competition. A wide range of sports and teams provide an opportunity for almost every boy to compete in weekly competitions.

Facilities for sport include seven sports fields, an all-weather hockey field, 26 synthetic tennis courts, a Junior School gymnasium and an impressive indoor Sports Centre featuring a heated swimming and diving pool, basketball courts, a fully-equipped gymnasium, three squash courts and a weight-training complex.

Extensive rowing facilities are situated on the banks of the Yarra River, and are conveniently located within the school grounds. A modern boat shed houses a remarkable array of rowing and motor boats and provides comprehensive weight-training facilities.

Outdoors and services program: encouraging personal growth

At Scotch we strongly believe that the greater the range of activities each student undertakes, the happier and more successful he is likely to be. A complete education involves experiences outside the classroom to provide the broadest possible opportunities for personal growth and development.

An active outdoors and services program is very much part of every boy’s experience, allowing them to undertake activities as varied as bushwalking, archery, sailing, canoeing, rock climbing and scuba diving. Scouts, Cadets, pipe and military bands and sports first aid are just some of the courses on offer.

Most of these activities involve at least one camp a year that is carefully tailored to meet the needs of boys in each year level. To support these camps, Scotch maintains a beachside property at Cowes on Phillip Island and 80 hectares of rainforest and camping grounds near Healesville.

These activities develop valuable skills such as initiative, responsibility, independence and self discipline. As students mature they are encouraged to develop leadership skills whilst assisting younger students to discover their own abilities and potential.

Academic Scholarship

For entry into Years 7, 9 and 10. Based on English and Maths exams and an interview. May involve a family means test.

Boarding Scholarship

For entry into Year 9. Open to children of families who live in country areas or overseas. Based on English and Maths exams and an interview. May involve a family means test.

Means Tested Scholarship

For entry into Years 7 and 9. Open to students who are experiencing financial disadvantage and would otherwise be unable to attend the school. Based on English and Maths exams, school reports, sporting ability, and good character.

Music Scholarship (Junior)

For entry into Year 7. Based on English and Maths exams and an audition. Must meet minimum AMEB level.

Music Scholarship (Senior)

For entry into Years 9-10. Based on English and Maths exams and an audition. Must meet minimum AMEB level.
