As Principal at Preshil I am very dedicated to continuing the school's unique character and its significance in the educational landscape. Preshil The Margaret Lyttle Memorial School has been at the forefront of progressive education in Victoria for over eighty years. The school remains committed to its traditional core values of respect for each individual student in the process of nurturing their creativity and helping them to choose a path which is right for them. Strong social relationships form the basis of our culture and this approach to schooling is still leading the way in contemporary educational research, at a time when conventional education is becoming ever more regimented and standardized. Preshil's physical environment is quite distinctive, with spaces designed to enhance individuality and relationships which foster real life learning and collaboration. It is a privilege to speak on behalf of our school community.
- Ms Marilyn Smith (Principal). Every great journey starts with a single step
A journey that starts at Preshil has endless potential.
As a small school with a low student–teacher ratio, our children take an active role in their education, in turn developing a responsibility for their actions and ultimately their future. We offer unique programs from Nursery School onwards that include choosing, making and imagining as fundamental capacities. Learning is developed through independent and child-centred projects, based on a philosophy that emphasises the development of each child to their full potential rather than competition between children. Both collaborative and independent learning, involving a variety of teaching strategies, underpin the program at Arlington, the Junior School, providing both depth of study and breadth of curriculum. Preshil nurtures children's selfesteem, love of learning and independence.
Through appreciating the potential of children, establishing partnerships with families and involving itself with the wider community, Preshil continues to build on its culture that honours diversity and values difference. This nurturing environment continues at the senior campus, Blackhall Kalimna, and is balanced by a strong intellectual rigour. Insightful and informed teaching practices lend valuable support to our learning programs. Students in our middle years are encouraged to develop their individual identity through strong social relationships. Discipline is based on a commitment to shared values, and students are supported to find their own pathway towards adulthood.
There is no such thing as a typical Preshil student. At our core remains an unshakeable commitment to encouraging all children and young adults to progress at their own optimum pace towards their own goals and to be respected in their own right. Our alumni achieve in outstanding ways and our students emerge as confident young adults, able to speak up in an adult environment, challenge, question and look beneath the surface. Preshil students are well equipped to thrive in their tertiary studies, enter the workforce or follow their passions in whatever way they choose.
